SMOKE DETECTORS We’ll be turning the clocks back on Sunday, November 1st, and that’s a good time to test your smoke detectors. Your smoke detectors have 10 year lithium batteries and a test and hush feature. Please TEST all of them this month. Do not replace a bad battery with a standard 9 volt battery. You must replace the battery with a 10 year lithium battery.
GUTTERS We will begin cleaning gutters and checking downspouts in late November and early December following the leaf-drop. Please let us know if you are having any problems with overflowing gutters or downspout backups.
HEAT If you have a forced air or gravity-fed furnace, now is the time to make certain that your furnace filter is clean. A clean filter will lower your heating costs and protect the furnace and provide you with better air quality.
If you have electric baseboard heat or forced air electric wall heaters, they should be vacuumed around the coils and checked. If there are any problems, please give us a call. Also, make certain that your furniture, drapes or other combustibles are not in contact with these heaters and are at least three feet from them.
EXTERIOR WATER SPIGOTS Please check around your house or apartment and make certain that the hose spigots are covered for the winter. Those of you renting houses should have the covers stored in the basement or garage. If you do not have covers available you may wrap newspaper, a thick stack, around the spigots and attach with duct tape - or give us a call - we’ll be happy to help.
FOUNDATION VENTS For those of you with exposed foundation vents, it is time to close them off to keep the chilly winds out and your homes warmer and to prevent frozen pipes. If there are no vent covers in your garage or basement, call us and we’ll get you what you need.
FREEZING PIPES When the temperatures drop below 30 degrees, please keep a slow trickle of water running in BOTH hot and cold faucets of your sinks and keep cabinet doors open to allow heat from the house to warm the pipes. If, in spite of all your efforts, your plumbing pipes do freeze, CALL US IMMEDIATELY.
OUT OF TOWN Please remember that you are required to notify us if you plan to be away from your home for seven days or more. During the winter it is very important that you notify us of ANY absences of a few days or more.
REMINDER: Please notify the office of any contact information changes that occur.
Thank You.
